He came out of the forest his eyes wide as if in awe of me. He reached out his hand something caught my eye. Two sticks twist together they had grown entwined. The black sky was full of clouds and my hands were full of dirt. She came two minutes early he’s gone he’s disappeared. Her pull has changed my path I rotate around her. She slams the door open falls into my arms and sobs. I can’t say one single thing we’re alone there’s no one else.

One night as you looked at me you were there, you were there with me. Now you lie here next to me you aren’t here with me. How long have we been apart? Strange how fast time passes. I see my eyes open I’m here but not here with you.

The first time I went to the park a swan split the pond and beckoned me. I walked over the damp ground until I stood in front of it. I bowed my head and it rubbed its beak over my lips.

That was when I received the swan’s kiss.

Everything is perfect now, the old red fence in front of our house, the sun shining through the branches of the weeping willow, all of the everyday things revealed their true nature.

The swan never came back. It smelled of green and blue, and the moment of contact between sky and water. I waited for him everyday, and I wait for him now. He distorted my body so it will only fit next to him, in the mud, and then left.

When I got home my dress and shoes were covered in mud and I had to wash them myself. Mother was angry. I couldn’t believe that she couldn’t see the change. She couldn’t see the mark of the swan on my lips. She combed my hair; made me supper, and the world went rushing on again.
